They Might Be Giants: Factory Showroom

Like our very own Carter USM wacky, lo-budget nerd duo; accidentally big in 1991 - They Might Be Giants got themselves an unnecessary drummer one album ago. A further similarity: neither act is going to let waning UK popularity stop them putting records out (in native America, their curve still points modestly up). This sixth album, though their richest self-production to date, still rings with the old Two Johns (Linnell and Flansburgh) hallmarks: perky tempos, surreal lyrical concerns, sci-fi organ. Their collegiate boogie is actually in hearty shape, tracks like Metal Detector, Pet Name and XTC Vs Adam Ant as good as anything on their head-turning Lincoln album. The insincere doo-wop and one recording on an 1898 Edison wax cyclinder will still make tattooed men squirm.
