Apollo 18

Unknown source, 1992

They Might Be Giants continue their strange journey through contemporary music, as they roundly filch from all and any sources to create something that's quaint and quirky. The main feature of Apollo 18 is the 21-track "Fingertips Suite" which, when shuffled on a CD player, will interact and re-create itself depending on how it's programmed. Add to that techno wizardry, a brace of songs that continue TMBG's brand of Todd Rundgren-styled DIY commercialism and the end result is the usual slice of fun. Perhaps not as strong as their last album, Flood, which contained the hit "Birdhouse in My Soul" [sic], Apollo 18 is never less than entertaining. However, like their previous outings, it may well grate after repeated plays. Ultimately though, commendations must go out to any band who can make accessible pop tunes from phrases like "I'm having a heart attack," "Come on wreck my car" and the groundbreaking "Pass the milk." ***
