They Might Be Giants, Lincoln

I was a fan of TMBG (John Linnell and John Flansburgh) long before they were MTV staples. For one thing, any band that includes an accordion in their repertoire will find a place in even my already overpopulated heart. Nor could I resist the duo's very addictive melodies and dark, off-the-wall humor on their self-titled debut EP. There's plenty of all that on their first full-length album, Lincoln, too; 18 songs (to be exact) that jump fitfully from one musical genre to another, including salsa, country, even power pop. I must say that I prefer Linnell's nasal and slightly strained vocals (as in "Ana Ng") to Flansburgh's more conventional voice; it suits their majorly ironic lyrics. At their best, TMBG are truly inspired and completely original. At their worst, they are extremely silly. Okay with me either way.
